Употребление глаголов Can И May В современном английском языке часто вызывает затруднение. Подчас сложно сразу же сказать, какое предложение будет верным “May we expect you tomorrow?” или “Can we expect you tomorrow?”

Когда-то по строгим правилам английской грамматики Can Выражал Физическую Или Умственную Способность, а May – Разрешение и Одобрение. Считалось неправильным использовать Can В значении разрешения. Для этого был глагол May :– May I accompany you to the concert, Miss Smith– Why of course you may, honey.

А о способностях к танцам эта молодая леди могла спросить так:– Can you do the tango?

И получить, например, такой положительный ответ:– Why of course I can, Miss Smith.

Сегодня правила языка не так определенны. Уже со второй половины 19 века Can Используется в неформальной речи для выражения разрешения. Например, можно было услышать следующее:Can I go to the party? – Можно я пойду на вечер?

И в наши дни, Can Также используется в Неформальном Контексте для выражения разрешения. Учителя начальных классов часто слышатCan I go to the garden?

А родителей преследуетCan I have a doll?

Дети повторяют то, что слышат от взрослых, а последние, как видно, все больше отдаляются от May, звучащего порой слишком чопорно.Лингвист Вейхман также разделяет данные глаголы, замечая, что вопрос с May “звучит вежливее”.Поэтому можно сделать вывод, что только в формальных и официальных ситуациях

НежелиCan I have more salt, please?

А если вы постучались в дверь, то лучше спроситьMay I come in?

Что же касается Запрещения, то употребление Mayn’t крайне не рекомендуется. Это относится ко всем стилям.You can’t go to the disco.

Употребление May В таких случаях, хотя формально и допустимо, но звучит неестественно. Образованные люди скорее скажут “Can’t I?” а не “Mayn’t I?” или “May I not?” И даже по строгим правилам английской грамматики вопрос “Why mayn’t I go to the disco?” звучит неверно, можно сказать “не по-английски” Итак, в ближайшем будущем глагол Mayn’t, скорее всего, станет архаизмом, если уже не стал.

А теперь вернемся к вопросу, заданному в начале статьи. Какой же вариант будет правильным “Can or may we see you tomorrow?” Вначале следует понять, что подразумевает говорящий: способность или разрешение. Для этого можно заменить глагол, например, его эквивалентом:Are we allowed to see you tomorrow?

Сразу же понятно, что значение разрешения не подходит.Но и способность в данном случае также не подразумевается:Are we mentally able to see you tomorrow?

Если поразмыслить немного, то приходишь к выводу, что в данном случае наилучшим вариантом будет Might :Might we see you tomorrow?

Между тем, “Are you coming tomorrow?” также может подойти в данном случае. Но если бы необходимо было выбирать между Can И May, то предпочтение все же желательно отдавать первому:Can we see you tomorrow?

Итак, в неформальной обстановке употребление Can Вместо May Разрешено и широко применяется в речи, в то время как в официальном стиле для выражения одобрения рекомендуется использовать May.

Иногда "may", "can" и "to be able to" взаимозаменяемы. Например, при просьбе разрешить что-либо сделать, могут быть использованы оба глагола "may" и "can".

В данном значении глагол "can" приемлемо употреблять в неформальной обстановке. В формальной обстановке следует употреблять глагол "may". 

May I introduce Mr. Smith, our honorary guest?Разрешите мне представить нашего почетного гостя мистера Смит.

May I interrupt your conversation?Можно прервать вашу беседу?

May I come in?Yes, you may.Можно войти?Да, можно.

Глагол "may" звучит более вежливо, чем глагол "can" при просьбе о разрешении что-то сделать.

May I ask you a favor?Can I ask you a favor?Можно попросить вас об услуге?

Оба варианта приемлемы, но предложение с глаголом "may" звучит более вежливо.

Обратите внимание на то, что глагол "may" также может употребляться в других значениях, как например, для того чтобы указать на возможность происхождения каких-то явлений или событий в будущем:

Don't use Jack's notebook. He may not like it.Не пользуйся ноутбуком Джэка. Ему это может не понравится. (возможно, что ему это не понравится)

She may be upset if she is not invited. Онa может расстроиться если ее не пригласить. (возможно, она расстроится, а возможно и нет. Автор догадывается, но не знает о результате).

Глагол "can" часто употребляется для выражения возможности какого-то действия общего характера.

I can swim. Я умею плавать.You can learn Enlish at any age. Вы можете учить английский язык в любом возрасте.Can I help you? Могу я вам помочь?

Заметьте, что глагол "can" менее формален, чем глагол "be able to", и более общеупотребителен в разговорной речи.

У глагола "can" нет будущей формы, поэтому для выражения будущего действия он заменяется выражением "be able to".

I am busy and cannot come to the rehearsal today. I will be able to come tomorrow.Я занят и не могу прийти на репетицию сегодня. Я смогу прийти завтра.

"To be able" to употребляется для выражения способности или возможности исполнения какого-то действия, особенно в связи с обладанием каких-то особенных навыков или способностей, или обозначения того, что какое-то возможное действие имело успешный результат в силу каких-либо благоприятных обстоятельств или приложения каких-то способностей, навыков или усилий.

I was able to pass the exam because I had studied very hard.Я смог сдать этот экзамен потому, что я очень много занимался.

I was at the station early, so I was able to catch the first train.Я пришел на станцию рано, поэтому я смог сесть на первый поезд.

I took several swimming lessons, and I am able to swim now.Я взял несколько уроков по плавании и теперь я умею плавать.

Английский – очень вежливый язык. Чего стоит хотя бы тот факт, что все обращаются друг к другу на "вы". При общении важно выбирать правильные формы, потому что, хотя многие формы и имеют одинаковый перевод на русский, на английском они воспринимаются с разной степенью вежливости и формальности. Выражение разрешения на английском – яркий этому пример.

Чтобы выразить разрешение в английском языке существует несколько способов:

1. Модальные глаголы: can, could, may, might

2. Глаголы let, allow и permit

В этой статье мы с вами поговорим о модальных глаголах. В разговорной речи мы можем просить разрешения, давать разрешение или запрещать. Давайте рассмотрим, какие модальные глаголы выражают каждую из этих функций и в чем особенности их использования.

Просим разрешения (Asking for permission): can, could, may, might

Чтобы попросить разрешения на английском у нас есть большой выбор средств: модальные глаголы can, may, could, might.

Might – наиболее формальный вариант, остальные различаются уровнем вежливости. Could и may – более вежливые формы, чем can.  Хотя на русский вопросы с этими глаголами будут переводиться одинаково (Можно мне ...? , Могу я ...?), в английском выбор правильной формы в зависимости от ситуации общения играет большую роль. Если вы не очень хорошо знаете человека, то, чтобы попросить разрешения, используйте may или might. Если хотите вежливо попросить знакомого, то употребляйте could. Сan I ...? – менее формальный и вежливый, но универсальный вариант.

Mum, can I go for a walk? – Мам, можно я пойду погуляю? Jane, could I take a look at your report? – Джейн, можно я взгляну на ваш отчет? Excuse me, may I use your pen? – Прошу прощения, могу я воспользоваться вашей ручкой? Might I ask you a question, Mister Jones? – Могу я задать вам вопрос, мистер Джонс?

Обратите внимание, что на подобные  вопросы  обычно не отвечают просто "yes" или "no", так как это не просто общие вопросы, они передают определенную модальную функцию. Чтобы коротко ответить, обычно говорят "Sure", "Of course", "Certainly", "Why not?" или "I'm afraid not". 

Раз уж мы заговорили о том, как просить разрешения, давайте на минуту отвлечемся от модальных глаголов и рассмотрим еще несколько выражений:

Is it all right if I…? – Можно мне...?/ Ничего, если я ...?

Do you mind if I…? – Вы не возражаете, если я ...?

Если вам нужно задать вежливый вопрос, используйте would для его построения. Не забывайте, что после would следует глагол по второй форме (V2):

Would you mind if I V2…? – Вы не возражаете, если я ...? Would it be OK/all right if I V2…? – Вы не возражаете, если я ...?

Даем разрешение (Giving permission): can, may.

Для того, чтобы дать разрешение, не используются модальные глаголы could и might. Их можно встретить только в вопросах, а вот ответить, то есть дать разрешение допустимо только при помощи модальных глаголов can и may. Их очень просто использовать, так как они не меняются по родам и числам и переводятся как «можно»:

You may smoke in this room. – Вы можете курить в этой комнате. Now when you have finished doing your hometask you can go for a walk. – Теперь, когда ты закончил делать домашнее задание, ты можешь пойти погулять.

Основное различие между can и may – то, что can используется преимущественно в неформальном общении, а may – более формальный и вежливый вариант:

You can borrow my pencil if yours is broken. – Ты можешь взять мой карандаш, если твой сломался. You may ask the questions at the end of my presentation. – Вы можете задать свои вопросы в конце моей презентации.

Отказываем в разрешении (Refusing permission): can't, may not, mustn't

Чтобы отказать, не дать разрешение или запретить что-либо, существует три варианта: can't, may not и mustn't. Could не используется в этой функции.

Mustn't  – самый "сильный" отказ, когда не просто отказывают, а, скорее, запрещают:

You musn't eat ice-cream, you have sore throat.  – Тебе нельзя есть мороженное, у тебя больное горло. Students mustn't cheat at the exam. – Студентам запрещено списывать на экзамене.

И, конечно же, can, который используется в повседневном общении в большинстве ситуаций:

– Can I drive? – You can't, I'll drive myself. – Можно я поведу машину? – Нет, нельзя, я сам поведу.
