About my native town

Let me introduce myself. My name is Katya. I’m 16 years old. Moscow is my native town. I live in Izmaylovo district with my parents.

About my parents

My mother’s name is Ekaterina, too. She is a dentist; she says that she has always wanted to be a dentist since her childhood. My father’s name is Viktor. He is a businessman, which is why I, unfortunately, don’t see him quite often.

About my school

I study at school in the 10th grade. I can’t say that it is difficult for me to study: I find most of the subjects easy and useful. My favorite ones are English, Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology.

I enjoy learning English, because I like speaking with foreigners when I am abroad on summer holidays. I find Chemistry very interesting as I’ve always been fascinated by the way substances interact.

About my goals

My father has always been telling me that in order to succeed in life one has to have a developed analytical thinking that is why I am keen on working with mathematical problems.

So, if you ask me who I want to be in the future, I will tell you that I want to become a specialist in research and development in a cosmetic company.

About my hobbies and interests

Nevertheless, there are not only studies in my life. In my free time I meet with my friends. We usually go to cinema or to some café and chat over a cup of coffee or tea.

I am fond of sports, and I go to a gym on a regular basis where I do aerobics and cardio to keep fit. 

Moreover, I like to dance and listen to music. Dancing to my favorite beats, I relax. Dance helps me to express my feelings and emotions. 

So, I have a very diverse and interesting life.

А еще я люблю танцевать и слушать музыку. Танцуя под любимые ритмы, я расслабляюсь. Танец помогает мне выразить свои чувства и эмоции.

 ABOUT MYSELF

My name is Lorraine Swann and I was born in London, England on the second of September 2003. My family is an averaged-sized English family; I have a mother, father and a brother. My mother is a housewife but does some part-time work every morning at the local college of higher education. My father has now retired but he used to work as a research chemist in a pharmaceutical company. My brother’s name is Michael, he is twenty one years old and is at university in Hudderafield. He is studying engineering.

I have just finished St. Ann’s Convent School in Southampton where I obtained four «А» levels. My immediate plans are to go to Manchester University and study Russian because I have always been interested in foreign languages. My mother is Italian so I can speak Italian fluently and I was lucky enough to study both French and German at school. While I was at school I also had the opportunity to learn a musical instrument. In my spare time I practice my flute.

I also enjoy meeting my friends at the weekend when we usually watch a film together and chat or go to a disco. When I have a lot of free time I like to sit down for the afternoon and read a good book, I particularly enjoy the traditional English classics like Charles Dickens and Thomas Hardy. I enjoy writing letters to my many friends abroad and if I have a lot of time I even like to do some cooking.

For the past two years, while I was at sixth-form college I had a part-time Saturday job in a shop as a sales assistant. I had to work from 9 a.m. — 6 p.m. with an hour’s lunch break, it was very interesting to meet the general public, to find out what sort of work shop- work is and of course to receive a bit of extra pocket money. In the evening, I spend my time watching television like every other teenager does too.

В течение двух прошлых лет  во время пребывания в подготовительном колледже я подрабатывала по субботам в магазине в качестве продавца-консультанта. Я должна была работать с 9:00 до 18:00 с обеденным перерывом. Мне было очень интересно встретить множество людей, узнать, каково это – работать в магазине, и, конечно, получить немного дополнительных карманных денег. Вечером, как и любой подросток, я провожу свое время, смотря телевизор.

They say, that I am a hardworking person. To tell the truth, all school subjects come easy for me but sometimes. I have to sit much, for example, to do lessons in Physics or Chemistry, to write a composition or to learn a poem by heart. But my favourite subject is English. I spend much time on it reading books, doing tests etc. May be, English and learning it will be a part of my future career.

I like reading. I think comics and detective stories are much easier to read but I prefer to read novels - historical or up-to-date. I like music. My musical tastes are different, but it depends on my mood. But I think every apple is good in its season. I play the piano and the guitar, not seriously, but for my soul. Sometimes I like to listen to the Russian classical music. My favourite composers are Chaikovsky and Mozart. I don't like rock music, but I like "Queen" and "Beatles" .

Also I like Russian folk songs. I have not much time to watch IV but sometimes I spend an hour or two watching an interesting film or a news programme. In the evening I often read newspapers (our local ones) or magazines. I like fresh air and exercise. I'm sorry I have not much time for doing sports. But some aerobics in the morning, a swimming-pool twice a week, a ski-walk on a frosty day are of great help. Sports is fun.

I have a wide circle of interests. I'm very sociable, so I get a way with people. I have many friends, most of them are my class-mates. We spend much time together, going out to the cinema or to the disco party, speaking about lessons and music, discussing our problems. But most of all I like my family. We all are great friends and deeply attached to each other.

You see, it's me - a person with his good and not good characteristics, liking this and hating that. But it's interesting for me to live, to open new things.

Ten years ago our family moved to Sochi – one of the most beautiful cities in Russia situated on the Black Sea coast. My home address is: Lenin Street 117, apartment 34. My mobile phone number is 89174570233. I am studying at the Sochi Technical Academy. Now I’m a full time first-year student. In five years I’ll become an engineer.

Some words about my appearance. I’m tall and slim; I’ve got fair hair and blue eyes. My friends say that I’m a pretty girl. I think I am just good-looking. My star sign is Pisces. I think I’m a communicative, energetic, hard-working, responsible and positive person. I like sports and music. I was very serious about the career in gymnastics when I was in the 5-th form. But then I broke my arm and doctors didn’t let me go in for gymnastics. I love listening to modern music, especially hip-hop and R’n’B, and I’m fond of dancing. I dance a lot and I think I’m good at it.

In May I finished school number 2 in Sochi. I did well in all the subjects but my favourite subjects at school were Physics and Computer Science. I liked English lessons too. I’m very interested in learning English because I know that the knowledge of foreign languages will help me in my everyday life and career.Two years ago I travelled around Europe. I visited France, Germany and Great Britain. The knowledge of English helped me a lot there.

Topic 2. Our university

Higher education plays an important role in the life of any country as it provides the country with highly-qualified specialists for future development and progress. In all industrial countries standards of living are steadily changing. This means that styles of teaching, quality of learning materials and organization of the university itself have to be continuously brought up to date and improved. The scientific and technological progress of a country is determined by the qualification of specialists.

Ufa State Petroleum Technological University is one of the largest and most prestigious institutions not only in Bashkortostan, but in Russia too. It trains young people to become engineers in oil and gas industry. We are all proud of being students of our university. It was founded in 1948 as Ufa Oil Institute and in 1993 it was awarded a university status. There were only 150 students and 3 faculties at that time. Now it has 3 branches (in Salavat, Sterlitamak and Oktiabrsky cities) and trains about 14,000 students at nine departments. They are:

1. Automation 7. Economics

2. Oil and Gas Mining 8. Humanities

3. Pipeline Transportation 9. Extra-mural department

4. Mechanical

5. Technological

6. Architecture and Building Engineering

The head of the university is Rector. Each faculty has a number of specialized chairs and is headed by dean. The course of studies lasts 5 years. The academic year begins on the first of September; it lasts nine months and is divided into two terms. Students take exams at the end of each term. Twice a year students have vacations – two weeks in winter and two months in summer.

The first-and-second year students obtain thorough instructions in the fundamental sciences such as mathematics, physics, chemistry and drawing as well as computer engineering and a number of others. It is known that the knowledge of the general engineering subjects is necessary for future engineers. The curricular are enriched and broadened by instructions in such subjects as foreign languages, history and economics. The third- year students get more advanced knowledge and begin to concentrate on their special interests, so to say, on their “major” subjects and take many courses on these subjects. Specialized study help students to become specialists and prepare them for their future work.

Theory is accompanied by practice. We’ve got a lot of laboratories, classrooms, libraries, computer centres, workshops to provide high level of training. The university is in close connection with oil enterprises, so our students can have their practice in oil plants, refineries, pipe-line construction sites, at research institutions, oil and gas companies and other places throughout the country.

Students are provided with student’s hostels. The students making good progress get state grants. Some of students are sponsored by enterprises.

In their spare time students may go in for sports in our own sports centre, attend computer centres, dance classes, English theatre and other societies andclubs.

Education is a process through which culture is preserved, knowledge and skills are developed, values are formed and information is exchanged. Education is the way to success!
